LG 55LA8600 Review
55" Edge-lit LED LCD Smart TV, $2699

Performance

I'll admit, it took me a day or two to feel really comfortable with the LG 55LA8600's picture.

I wasn't fine tuning it that whole time. In fact, I pretty much had the adjustments set in less than 30 minutes. It just took me a spell, viewing a variety of content sources, to appreciate this TV's picture quality.

This LG has edge-lit local dimming and even though I prefer a good full array dimming system, the contrast was fine. If you want really deep rich blacks, then take a look at one of LG's (or Samsung's or Panasonic's) plasma models.

With all the picture adjustment tools, you can tweak this responsive LG display to render just the look to suit your taste, whether bright and lively or subdued and refined.

As for 3D, I prefer the passive system that this LG employs rather than the active shutter scheme. Not only do I find the glasses much more comfortable, but I favor the quality of 3D image it renders.

LG 55LA8600 3D

When watching a well-produced 3D movie like Oz, the Great and Wonderful, the 55LA8600 does a great and wonderful job of recreating that extra dimensionality.

I've noticed in the last couple of years, TV manufacturers are making an attempt to improve the quality of the built-in audio system. And the LG 55LA8600 reflects that trend. But in the end, you can only work so many miracles with the space provided by these flat screens.

LG has even added a subwoofer to the pair of 12W speakers. The audio quality is OK. With some content, if you pump the Volume to 75 or 80, you may hear some rattling.

Seriously though, if you are spending two grand on this TV, make your investment worth it by at least adding a high-end sound bar, better yet, a dedicated 5.1 or 7.1 audio system.

Conclusion

This top of the line LG 55LA8600 Smart TV is overflowing with apps and gee whiz features like voice recognition and motion control. More importantly, the picture quality is excellent, especially the 3D performance.
