Sony BRAVIA XBR-46HX929 Review
46" Direct-lit LED LCD 3D HDTV, $2599
Performance
All the advanced technology that Sony has shoehorned into the HX929 pays off in great Picture Quality (PQ).
Many times, especially with Blu-ray content, the images that this BRAVIA displays are simply gorgeous. The full array backlight with local dimming creates deep blacks, which challenge plasma displays.
If I have any qualms, occasionally the colors are too lively, even with Live Color turned off. I feel as if the TV is too responsive, which makes the PQ less consistent as it plays different content.
But let me reiterate, most often the HX929's PQ is stunning.
And it's 3D performance isn't half bad either.
I've found that animated movies like Tangled make good reference sources to judge a TV's 3D PQ. And the HX929 recreated the depth effects with aplomb.
I'm not a huge advocate of the active shutter 3D glasses and I did notice a slight rapid blinking when watching brightly lit scenes. I also find that the picture color subtly but noticeably shifts if you lean your head from side to side.
As for integrated audio, Sony TVs have always ranked at or near the top of my list.
The HX929 has added a third 10W speaker, which seems to aid in creating a surround sound effect while maintaining clear voice reproduction.
The Audio menu offers a few basic adjustments. Be aware that some of the Scene choices like Cinema will change audio settings as well as video.
No matter how much tweaking you do, those three little speakers cannot reproduce the full sonic range that a dedicated 5.1 or 7.1 audio system can. If you afford the HX929, you definitely should match it with a comparable audio setup.
Conclusion
The BRAVIA HX929 currently reigns as Sony's king of the hill and with superior Picture Quality and a castle full of Internet content providers, this full array LED backlit 3D TV deserves the crown.
