LONDON - September 26, 2013 - Cambridge Audio, a world-class acoustic design team with decades of Hi-Fi audio innovations, announces Aero, a new speaker range developed from the ground up to offer stunning results with music and movies. Aero radically combines BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) drivers, instead of traditional tweeters, with conventional cone drivers for an entirely new approach to speaker design.

Cambridge Audio has unrivalled experience with BMR drivers, having implemented them extensively in the award-winning Minx speakers in recent years. Using a BMR driver instead of a traditional tweeter gives Aero several key advantages over its rivals.

Cambridge Audio Aero

In traditional tweeters, the crossover between the tweeter and driver happens at about 3kHz, right at the point where our ears are most sensitive to any distortions or differences between the two sources. But with a BMR driver, the crossover happens at 250Hz, far outside the most sensitive hearing frequencies. The result is fantastically clear, natural and coherent audio.

The driver construction also delivers a more coherent, room-filling sound with a wider dispersion. Traditional tweeters create sound with a pistonic in-out motion, but BMR drivers create sound not only with in-out motion but also surface vibration. Rather than demanding pinpoint placement by protractor and measuring tape, Aero speakers can be placed much more freely - to better fit the room - and will still produce great stereo and surround sound.

BMR drivers also enable a clearer separation of duties between the drivers needed for high and mid frequencies and those needed for lower frequencies. Like the BMR drivers, all of the Aero range's bass drivers are custom designed to suit their specific application and each was specifically designed with a clear crossover at 250Hz in mind, so there's less chance of two drivers with different characteristics audibly overlapping.

Equally important, each of the Aero cabinets was created in house and the ultra rigid MDF design offers the best possible platform for musical reproduction. Five distinct models to suit every set-up and two carefully selected finishes - dark walnut and black - mean there's an Aero for every home.

The end result sounds markedly different to traditional speaker designs. This is a new type of speaker with a new type of sound - clear, natural and coherent throughout its range and capable of producing both immersive washes of room-filling surround sound and yet fantastic pin-sharp locational effects.

Radical, yet classic - the Cambridge Audio Aero range is here. Remove your preconceptions of what speakers sound like, and listen for yourself.

In more depth...

  • BMR driver - By replacing the traditional tweeter with a BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) driver, the Aero range offers several key advantages over rival speakers. Using the BMR shifts the crossover point between tweeter and woofer away from the usual 3kHz, right at the middle of the human ear's most sensitive hearing range, to a less problematic 250Hz. The result is a more natural, immersive and coherent sound. BMRs also offer a wider dispersion, so speakers can be placed in a wider range of places while still delivering excellent stereo and surround effects - making these speakers ideal for modern homes.
  • Custom-designed mid-bass drivers - As well as offering a more coherent sound at the top end, moving to a 250Hz crossover between BMR and traditional drivers and subwoofers offers advantages at the bottom end too. Aero cone drivers and subwoofers are specifically designed to complement the BMR drivers, concentrating cone drivers and subwoofers on what they do best: lower frequencies.
  • Premium construction - Aero cabinets are designed not only to look classic, discreet and stylish, but also are constructed using CAD techniques and critical bracing to minimise distortion and maximise audio quality.
  • Minimalist, classic looks - Combined with the subtle looks of the BMR drivers, these speakers with black or dark walnut cabinets combine modern minimalism with classic speaker cabinet design.

Cambridge Audio's Aero line will be on display in Denver at CEDIA September 25th-28th at booth #3306.
